The Game of Blackjack

Blackjack is one of the most widespread popular card games in the world and is considered a classic in Canadian, European, Russian and American casinos. It's popularity some say is a mix of chance and skill.

Some of the key aspects of the game are:-

The History of the Game of Blackjack

Like many casino games the history of blackjack is somewhat unclear, however most historians tend to agree that blackjack's predecessor was a French game called Vingt-et-Un (“twenty one”) which is said to have originated in French casinos around 1700.

Whilst the goal of the game was to either to get a natural (cards totally 21) or to beat the dealer score without going over 21, the cards were actually dealt in rounds, only the dealer could double and if the dealer got a natural the house would be paid triple by all other players.

The game also had similarities to the Spanish game of “One and Thirty” but the desired total was 31 rather than 21 and the game was played with initial cards rather than 2.

Not long after the French Revolution, Vingt-Un finally made it's way from Europe to America, yet it wasn't until 1910 when the game reportedly started appearing in American gambling houses, reportedly in Evansville, Indiana.

When Vingt-Un was initially introduced it wasn't very popular in gambling houses so they tried introducing various bonus payouts to entire players to the game. One such bonus was a 10-to-1 payout if the player's hand consisted of the ace of spades and a blackjack (a jack of clubs or a jack or spades). This hand was referred to as a “blackjack” and regardless of this payout being later abolished the name stuck to the game ever since. The game as it is currently played, a “blackjack” a jack is not necessarily required, any ten-value card with an ace now makes up a winning hand combination.

After the prohibition was lifted from gambling, blackjack spread like wildfire throughout casinos, by 1919 the first green-felted tables for the game were made, and by 1931 blackjack was the third most popular Nevada casino game. As not all states were as liberal as Las Vegas, it quickly became the gambling center of the United States and has held that position ever since.
